David William Bacon (born September 15, 1815 in New York City , United States , † November 5, 1874 ibid) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Portland .

Life

David William Bacon was ordained a priest on June 10, 1838 and served in what would later become the diocese of Brooklyn .

Pope Pius IX appointed him on January 23, 1855 first bishop of the diocese of Portland, established a year and a half earlier. The Archbishop of New York , John Joseph Hughes , gave him on April 22 of that year at New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Boston , John Bernard Fitzpatrick , and the Bishop of Brooklyn, John Loughlin . The inauguration of the Prokathedrale raised St. Dominic's Church in Portland took place on 31 May of that year. His motto was Courage and Hope .

When he took office, the diocese of Portland had only eight churches. One of his first initiatives was the purchase of the land for today's cathedral . He laid the foundation stone for the first chapel in May 1856, and the inauguration took place that same year. The construction of the cathedral and the bishop's residence, which had just begun, fell victim to a fire in 1866. For the reconstruction, Bacon went on donation trips to New York, Boston and Canada. He also won the architect Patrick Keeley, whose pastor he had been in Brooklyn. The cathedral's consecration in September 1869 by the Bishop of Boston John Joseph Williams was overshadowed by a severe storm that destroyed the spire but left no injuries.

In a time that was marked by strong prejudice against the Catholics, Bacon succeeded in building up the diocese and founding numerous churches, schools and religious settlements. When he died, the diocese of Portland had 70,000 Catholics and 63 churches. Bacon died in New York on the way back from a trip to Rome. He found his burial place in the crypt of the cathedral.
