Richard Joseph Malone (born March 19, 1946 in Salem ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Buffalo .

Life

The Archbishop of Boston , Humberto Sousa Medeiros , ordained him on May 20, 1972 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Boston and titular bishop of Aptuca on January 27, 2000 . The Archbishop of Boston, Bernard Francis Cardinal Law , donated him episcopal ordination on March 1 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Boston William Francis Murphy and John Patrick Boles .

He was named Bishop of Portland on February 10, 2004, and inducted into the office on March 31 of the same year. He was named Bishop of Buffalo on May 29, 2012, and inducted into the office on August 10 of the same year.

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on December 4, 2019. Malone had previously admitted errors in dealing with an abuse scandal in his diocese.
