William Francis Murphy (born May 14, 1940 in Boston ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop from Rockville Center on Long Island , USA.

Life

The Rector of the Pontifical North America College , Francis Frederick Reh , ordained him a priest on December 16, 1964 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Boston and titular bishop of Saia Maior on November 21, 1995 . The Archbishop of Boston, Bernard Francis Cardinal Law , ordained him episcopal on December 27 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were William Wakefield Baum Cardinal , Kardinalgroßpönitentiar , and Alfred Clifton Hughes , Bishop of Baton Rouge .

He was named bishop of Rockville Center on June 26, 2001, and inducted into the office on September 5 of that year.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on December 9, 2016.
