Alfred Clifton Hughes (born December 2, 1932 in Boston ) is an American Roman Catholic clergyman . He is the Old Archbishop of New Orleans .

Life

Alfred Clifton Hughes was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston on December 15, 1957 .

Pope John Paul II named him auxiliary bishop in Boston on July 21, 1981 and titular bishop of Maximiana in Byzacena . The archbishop of Boston, Humberto Sousa Cardinal Medeiros , ordained him on 14 September of the same year Bishop ; Co-consecrators were the Boston auxiliary bishops Thomas Vose Daily and John Michael D'Arcy .

He was named bishop of Baton Rouge on September 7, 1993, and inducted into office on November 4 of the same year. On February 16, 2001, he was named Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans . After Francis Schultes retired , he succeeded him on January 3, 2002 as Archbishop of New Orleans. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation on June 12, 2009.

Alfred Hughes is Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and was Grand Prior of the U.S. Lieutenancy USA Southeastern of the Order.
