Francis Schulte

Francis Bible Schulte (born December 23, 1926 in Philadelphia ; † January 17, 2016 ibid) was Archbishop of New Orleans .

Life

Francis Schulte entered the St. Charles Seminary in Overbrook after attending Norwood Academy and St. Joseph School . He later graduated in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and Administrative Science from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May 10, 1952 . After teaching at Catholic schools in Philadelphia, he was engaged in the management of the Catholic schools of the diocese from 1960 to 1980, after all the second largest Catholic school system in the United States with over 300 institutions and almost 200,000 pupils and students. Pope Paul VI awarded him the honorary title of Superfluous Secret Chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ).

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Afufenia and auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia on June 27, 1981 . He received his episcopal ordination on August 12, 1981, the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Cardinal John Joseph Krol ; Co-consecrators were John Joseph Graham and Martin Nicholas Lohmuller , both auxiliary bishops in Philadelphia. In the same year Cardinal Krol appointed him vicar general .

On June 4, 1985, John Paul II called him Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston and on December 6, 1988 Archbishop of New Orleans. The solemn inauguration ( enthronement ) in New Orleans took place on February 14, 1989. On January 3, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation because of his age.

Schulte was involved in numerous organizations and offices in the focus of education. He has received seven honorary doctorates , including from Villanova University and LaSalle College .

Francis Schulte was Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and Grand Prior of the US Lieutenancy USA Southeastern of the Order.
