Stanley Joseph Ott

Stanley Joseph Ott (born June 29, 1927 in Gretna , Louisiana , † November 28, 1992 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Ott was bishop of the Baton Rouge diocese .

Life

Stanley Ott was the youngest of three children from Manuel and Lucille Ott. His cousin was the American baseball player Mel Ott . Trained at a denominational school in Gretna, where he also served as an acolyte , Ott graduated from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans . After graduating in 1944, he briefly considered joining the United States Army , but opted for a church career. He then graduated from Saint Joseph Seminary College in Covington , Louisiana, followed by Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. As a young student he also moved to Rome , where he completed his studies at the Pontifical North America College and the Pontifical Gregorian University . At the Gregoriana he received a doctorate in theology in 1954. In Rome itself he received on 8 December 1951. the hands of Archbishop Martin John O'Connor , the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1954 Ott returned to the United States, where he was curate at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church in New Orleans for three years until 1957 . He then served as a chaplain at Louisiana State University from 1957 to 1961 .

In 1961 Pope John XXIII founded the bishopric of Baton Rouge. Ott then became judicial vicar of the diocese and curate at St. Joseph Cathedral . In 1966 he was appointed chancellor of the diocese and in 1968 rector of the cathedral.

On May 24, 1976, Pope Paul VI appointed Ott as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Titular Bishop of Nicives . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Philip Hannan , 29 June 1976. co-consecrators were Bishops William Donald Borders and Joseph Vincent Sullivan . As auxiliary bishop he took on the duties of vicar general .

After the death of Bishop Sullivan of Baton Rouge in September 1982, Ott was appointed the new diocesan bishop by Pope John Paul II on January 13, 1983 . In the nine years that Ott headed his diocese, he made a great effort to use laypeople . He also supported the ecumenical movement by meeting representatives from other religious communities. As an opponent of abortion and a member of the right to life movement , he also represented conservative values. Ott attracted criticism in 1984 when he read a mass for the double murderer Elmo Patrick Sonnier , who was sentenced to death, but who had found his faith in prison shortly before his execution.

Ott was a member of the Sierra Club , belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was also a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Stanley Joseph Ott was a Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and was involved in the establishment of the Southeastern Lieutenancy in the USA in 1992 as Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of USA SOUTHERN .

In March 1991 Ott was diagnosed with liver cancer; a disease that spread to his spine in November 1991 . Eventually, although he was on chemotherapy , he lost the ability to walk. He died in late November 1992 at the age of 65.
