Melvin Thomas "Mel" Ott (born March 2, 1909 in Gretna , Louisiana , † November 21, 1958 in New Orleans ), nicknamed "Master Melvin", was a right fielder in Major League Baseball .

Ott played for the New York Giants (1926–1947) throughout his career . He was the first National League player to hit more than 500 home runs . In 1951, Mel Ott was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame . His jersey number, the "4", has not been given to a Giants player since 1949. He participated in 12 all-star games. Mel Ott died of a car accident in New Orleans at the age of 49 .

Mel Ott was one of the late baseball stars on Ray Kinsella's cornfield in the 1989 film Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner . In 2006 the American postal administration dedicated a special stamp to Mel Ott.

Mel Otts cousin was the American diocesan bishop of Baton Rouge, Stanley Joseph Ott .
