Gretna is a city in the US state of Louisiana and the administrative seat of Jefferson Parish . Gretna is on the west bank of the Mississippi River and is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area , which is on the opposite bank.

After its founding in the 19th century, the city grew mainly through a ferry service to New Orleans , which connected important rail lines with the east bank. Gretna gained national notoriety in connection with Cyclone Katrina in 2005, when police on the Crescent City Connection bridge blocked New Orleans refugees at gunpoint from entering the Gretna metropolitan area.
