Elfrid Payton, Jr. (born February 22, 1994 in Gretna , Louisiana ) is an American basketball player . He is currently under contract with the New York Knicks in the NBA .
Career
Payton played for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for three years . There he developed into one of the best point guards at the college level. His defense was particularly strong, which is why he was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year in 2014 and won the Lefty Driesell Award for best defender in NCAA Division I. In his junior year he scored 19.3 points, 6.0 rebounds , 5.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game and then signed up for the NBA draft .
In the 2014 NBA draft , he was initially selected in tenth place by the Philadelphia 76ers , but shortly thereafter transferred to the Magic for the draft rights to Dario Šarić .
Payton immediately established himself as a starter with the young Orlando Magic. In his rookie season, Payton achieved a triple-double in two consecutive games : on March 18, 2015 in a loss to the Dallas Mavericks (15 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists) and on March 20 in a win against the Portland Trail Blazers (22 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists). He was the first NBA rookie since Antoine Walker (1997) and the seventh in league history to do so. At the end of the season, Payton was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . In his first year, he scored 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game in 82 games.
On February 8, 2018, shortly before his contract expired, Payton was transferred from the Orlando Magic to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a second-round pick . For the Suns, Payton played 19 games in the same season before his contract was not renewed at the end of the season. As a free agent , Payton signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Pelicans on July 9, 2018. In March 2019, Payton scored five consecutive triple doubles , making Payton only the fifth player in the last 35 years to do so in the NBA. The others are Oscar Robertson , Wilt Chamberlain , Michael Jordan, and Russell Westbrook .
After his contract in New Orleans, Payton moved again within the league and signed a contract with the New York Knicks .
National team
Payton played in the 2013 U-19 World Basketball Championship and won the gold medal with the United States.
