Wayne Robert Ellington Jr. (born November 29, 1987 in Wynnewood , Pennsylvania ) is an American basketball player who plays for the New York Knicks in the NBA .
Career
Ellington played for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for three years . With the Tar Heels he won the 2009 NCAA Division I Basketball Championship and was named NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player . He then signed up for the 2009 NBA draft and was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 28th place.
Ellington spent three years with the Timberwolves and averaged 6.5 points and hit 37.6% off the three-point line. In the summer of 2012 he was transferred to the Memphis Grizzlies for Dante Cunningham . In the Grizzlies he achieved a career record on November 11, 2012 with 25 points in 7 of 11 three-point throws hit. Nevertheless, Ellington was transferred to the Cleveland Cavaliers during the season , where he contributed 10.4 points per game in the remaining 38 games.
That summer, Ellington signed with the Dallas Mavericks . With the Mavericks, however, he saw little operating time. The Mavericks gave him to the New York Knicks in the summer of 2014 as part of a transfer to Tyson Chandler . A few weeks later he was passed on to the Sacramento Kings , who released him shortly afterwards.
Ellington then signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers . With the unsuccessful Lakers, Ellington saw a lot of playing time. On January 27, 2015, he set a new career record with 28 points against the Washington Wizards . He closed the season with average career best scores (10.0), rebounds (3.2) and assists (1.6).
In the summer of 2015 he signed with the Brooklyn Nets and a year later he moved to the Miami Heat . In February 2019, he signed a contract with the Detroit Pistons until the end of the season .
