Russell Westbrook III (born November 12, 1988 in Long Beach , California ) is an American basketball player who is currently under contract with the Houston Rockets in the NBA . Previously, he was active for the Oklahoma City Thunder for over 10 years and during his time there was NBA All-Star several times and in 2017 most valuable player in the league (MVP). In the 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons he also led the league in points scored.

In addition to his spectacular style of play, Westbrook is also known for frequent triple doubles . In the 2016/17 season he was only the second player after Oscar Robertson (1962) to achieve a triple-double on average over the entire season. He repeated this performance twice in the following years, making him the only player to date who has succeeded in this several times. In addition to the most triple doubles within a season, he was also the only player besides Wilt Chamberlain who was able to achieve a "double triple double" in which all values exceeded 20 - on April 2, 2019, he scored in the game against the Los Angeles Lakers 20 points, 20 rebounds and 21 assists. Westbrook also holds the record for the most triple doubles in a season (42).

Childhood and high school

Westbrook was born in Long Beach, California, and grew up near his birthplace in Hawthorne . He has a younger brother, Raynard Westbrook. Westbrook has admired the Lakers legend Magic Johnson since he was a child .

Westbrook attended Leuzinger High School, which he won with a 25: 4 victory record and in the CIF-SS Div. I-AA quarterfinals led. He scored an average of 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds , 3.1 steals and 2.3 assists per game. In January 2006 he scored 51 points against Carson. He collected 14 double doubles during the season and scored more than 30 points in eight games. Until his senior year in high school , Westbrook couldn't darken, which motivated him to greatly improve his athleticism.

college

Westbrook played for two years for the UCLA Bruins of the University of California, Los Angeles , for which basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had already played. The team reached the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in both years , but lost in each of the semifinals. In 2007 the game against Florida was lost with 76:66 and in 2008 they failed to Memphis with 78:63. In his freshman year Westbrook went unnoticed with 3.4 points and was only a backup of Darren Collison . But in his sophomore year he was able to increase to a solid 12.7 points due to an injury to Collison and the promotion to starter. Then he signed up for the NBA draft .

NBA career

Oklahoma City Thunder (2008-2019)

Westbrook was selected 4th in the 2008 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics . The team moved to Oklahoma City that same year and has since competed under the name Oklahoma City Thunder . He signed his contract in July 2008. At the Thunder he met the highly talented Kevin Durant , with whom he was to represent the face of the team over the next few years. In his freshman year he shared the point guard position with Earl Watson .

Westbrook in March 2011

In December and February of the 2008-09 season he was named Rookie of the Month at the Western Conference . In December he averaged 15.5 points, 5.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game, in February even 20.6 points, 5.9 assists and 6.1 rebounds. He also achieved a triple double on March 2, 2009 with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the only 2008/09 rookie . He became the first rookie since Chris Paul in 2005/06 and only the third Sonics or Thunder player ever to do so. At the end of the season, he finished fourth in the rookie of the year poll - behind Derrick Rose , OJ Mayo and Brook Lopez . But he was elected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team .

In the following season Westbrook was able to increase his average from 15.3 to 16.1 points and from 5.3 to 8 assists per game. In the history of the NBA, only five other players at the age of 21 could deliver such values on average: LeBron James , Magic Johnson , Chris Paul , Isiah Thomas and Allen Iverson . In the play-offs he was able to increase again to 20.5 points per game, but it was not enough to win the series against the Los Angeles Lakers .

In the 2010/11 season Westbrook scored on November 12, 2010, his 22nd birthday, 36 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in the game against the Portland Trail Blazers . 14 days later he achieved his career best of 43 points against the Indiana Pacers , while he was still able to collect 8 rebounds and distribute 8 assists. Together with his teammate Kevin Durant, Westbrook was considered one of the league's most up-and-coming young talents. Thanks to his increased performance on the field, Westbrook was named an NBA All-Star . In the following season, he extended his expiring contract early by 5 years with a volume of over 80 million US dollars.

On March 4, 2014 in the game against the Philadelphia 76ers , Westbrook scored his second triple-double of the 2013-14 season with 13 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds in just twenty minutes of play. It was the second fastest triple double in NBA history at the time. On February 6, 2015, he scored 48 points against the New Orleans Pelicans and thus a career record in points.

Westbrook took part in the 2015 NBA All-Star Game and scored 41 points. He scored the second most points in an All-Star game, after Wilt Chamberlain , who has held the record with 42 points since 1962. He was then voted the MVP of the All-Star Game. In late February and early March 2015, Westbrook became the first player since Michael Jordan (in the 1988/89 season ) to have four triple doubles in a row. During this time he also set a new personal best in points (49 in the game against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 4). In the third game in the series, he broke a bone in his face after colliding with a teammate.

In the 2016 NBA All-Star Game , Westbrook scored 31 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. As in the previous year, he was elected NBA All-Star Game MVP and defended the title. So far, only Bob Pettit had succeeded in doing this in 1958 and 1959. On March 28, 2016, he scored his 16th triple-double of the season, which was also his seventh in March. It was the respective bests since the 1988/89 season , when Magic Johnson managed 17 triple doubles, while Michael Jordan also reached seven in April 1989. He also became the active player with the second most career triple doubles (after LeBron James) during the season. In the penultimate game of the 2015/16 season Westbrook reached his 18th season triple double, which he set Magic Johnson's record from the 1981/82 season (most season triple doubles since the ABA / NBA merger in 1976). It was the first time since the beginning of corresponding statistical surveys (2002/03) that a player managed a triple-double in the first half of the game.

Westbrook and André Roberson

Westbrook and the Thunder started the 2016/17 season without Kevin Durant . Durant left the team and moved to the Golden State Warriors , which meant that Westbrook was solely responsible. Westbrook signed a three-year contract worth 85.7 million US dollars at the start of the season. Westbrook had a historic season, breaking Oscar Robertson's 1967 triple-double record with 42 triple-doubles in one season. He is also only the second player in NBA history, next to Robertson in the 1961/62 season, who was able to play a triple-double on average. He also overtook Wilt Chamberlain on the day of the record break, with a total of 79 triple doubles in his career, which puts him in fourth place.

With the Thunder he achieved 47 wins and sixth place in the Western Conference, which also qualified for the play-offs. He was also the best scorer in the league for the second time with a career record of 31.6 points per game. In the play-offs, the Thunder were eliminated by the Houston Rockets in the first play-off round. Westbrook won the MVP award at the end of the season thanks to its historic NBA season .

In addition, in the game against the Los Angeles Lakers on April 2, 2019, he was only the second player after Wilt Chamberlain in NBA history to score a so-called "double" triple-double with 20 points, 20 rebounds and 21 assists.

Houston Rockets (since 2019)

Prior to the 2019/20 season , Westbrook was transferred to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Chris Paul and several draft picks .

National team

In 2010 Westbrook was a member of the US national basketball team . In 2012 he won gold with the team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Style of play

Westbrook is best known as an attack-oriented point guard . This often caused discussions, as many experts see assists as the main task of a point guard and Westbrook's statistical values initially showed deficits there. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, however, these values increased massively, so that Westbrook was even more effective, not only as a scorer, but also as a successful template provider.

Westbrook is considered one of the most spectacular dunkers in the league, as despite his only 1.91 meters he often performs dunks that require special athleticism. Another quality is his ability to intercept passes and steal the ball from opponents. In the 2011/12 season, with 1.6 steals per game, he was the NBA player with the tenth highest value in this category.
