Robert Covington (born December 14, 1990 in Bellwood , Illinois , United States ) is an American basketball player who currently plays for the Houston Rockets in the NBA .

Career

Covington first played four years at college level for Tennessee State University before he was automatically entered for the NBA draft . However, in the 2013 NBA draft , he was not selected by any NBA team. In the following NBA Summer League 2013 he played with the Houston Rockets and was then signed by the Rockets for the 2013/14 NBA season . However, he completed only seven regular season games with 2.3 points per game. Most of his rookie season he was with the Rockets farm team , the Rio Grande Valley Vipers , where he was D-League All-Star and Rookie of the Year in his first year.

Before the start of the 2014/15 NBA season , Covington signed a contract with the Philadelphia 76ers , where he directly benefited an important role in a young Sixer team. He finished the season greatly improved with 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Over the next few years, Covington established itself as the nominal small forward of the Sixers and signed a $ 62 million four-year contract in the fall of 2017. He was elected to the 2018 NBA All-Defensive First Team for his outstanding defensive performance .

In November 2018, Covington was transferred to the Minnesota Timberwolves along with two other players for Jimmy Butler . After a year Covington was transferred back to the Houston Rockets as part of a twelve-player transfer.
