The Piesberger Feldbahn is a 1.2 km long, tourist-used light railway system near Osnabrück with a gauge of 600 mm. It was built from 2009 on the site of the quarry at Piesberg on the route of a factory railway with 575 mm gauge that was previously here .

history

From around 1880 the cut stones were transported from the quarry on a narrow-gauge horse-drawn tram . The use of locomotives took place from 1912. First, benz locomotives from the Deutz company were used, later also diesel locomotives from the same manufacturer. The track network reached lengths of up to 110 km, on which 20 locomotives and over 2000 lorries were used.

Until 1957, the transport took place exclusively with the field railway, but later this was replaced by trucks and completely stopped and dismantled in the early 1960s. Most of the vehicles were scrapped, and a few were sold to other light rail companies.

Museum field railway

In 2008, the association “Museum für Feldspurige Industriebahnen eV” had to leave an area in Ostercappeln- Hitzhausen that had been in use since 1988 because it was to be used for other purposes. The club owns, among other things, a locomotive and two lorries that were previously used on the Piesberg.

In cooperation with the Museum of Industrial Culture (Osnabrück) , the association was able to move to Piesberg. A former pump house of the Piesberg stone industry, which is not far from the Haseschacht building , the main building of the museum, was gutted and converted into a locomotive shed with a workshop by 2009 . The first track systems were also built in that year. The construction work was funded by the German Federal Environment Foundation with more than € 30,000.

Parts of the association's vehicle collection were transported to Osnabrück and offered the first public trips in the area of the industrial museum for the “Bergfest” on September 6, 2009. Former ammunition transport wagons, which have been given a new body, serve as passenger cars. By 2011 the line had been extended to a length of 1.2 km to the “Südstieg” station. Light rail vehicles can be loaded onto a siding leading to the entrance to the quarry. In addition to the workshop in the old pump house, several garages have been built in the area of the “Schlammteich” stop to store vehicles and material. It is planned to build an exhibition hall for the museum presentation of the vehicle collection.

Route

The “Industriemuseum” train station is located above the Haseschacht building on Fürstenauer Weg. From here the trains drive in an easterly direction via the “Schlammteich” demand stop to the entrance of the quarry, which is still in operation today. The entrance to the quarry is crossed with a 40 m long bridge, followed by a cut called a “ canyon ”, which was created through the rock. The destination of the journey is the "Südstieg" train station. From there, passengers can reach a viewing platform on the rocky ridge via 350 steps.

Northern route

An extension of the route network is currently under construction. The new section will connect to the western end of the network and circumnavigate the quarry to the west. A breakpoint is to be built at the ruins of the Stüveschacht in the north of the Piesberg. Originally the end point was supposed to be on Grubenweg in the Wallenhorst district of Lechtingen , but since the construction costs were two-thirds higher than the original calculation, the new route was shortened from the originally planned 2.8 km to around 1.4 km and ends at the Stüveschacht. The first clearing work for the section known as the northern section began in December 2018.
