The Museum am Schölerberg in Osnabrück is a municipal museum for nature and the environment. The new museum building opened in 1988 has been recognized as a regional environmental education center since 1997.

description

Architecturally, the building is modeled on the spiral shape of an ammonite . In addition to natural science collections, permanent and special exhibitions, the museum also houses a planetarium . There is also a large outdoor area with the museum garden and chicken rearing. The museum offers a varied program of events for schools, kindergartens and private individuals all year round.

History of the museum

In 1870 the natural science association Osnabrück was founded. According to the first statutes, the purpose of the association was "to promote and disseminate knowledge of nature, its products and the use of it, with special consideration of the Principality of Osnabrück " (today roughly corresponds to the area of the city and district of Osnabrück ). The resources should be a natural history collection, a library and regular meetings with lectures and discussions. In 1879 the museum association was founded, in which the natural science association became a member. Rooms were rented in the former district court and a first exhibition was created. In the following years there was a significant growth in the collection. In 1887 it was decided to build a new museum building (today's Museum of Cultural History ). The museum association ran the museum for almost four decades. In 1929 the museum and its collections were transferred to the city of Osnabrück. In 1961, the natural science department was outsourced to the neighboring building, Villa Schlikker . Since 1971 this department has been run as an independent municipal natural history museum.

In the 1980s, many museums were newly founded or built. In Osnabrück, too, a political decision was made to build a new building for the Natural History Museum. The idea of a closer merger with the zoo led to the building, reopened in 1988, which is modeled on an ammonite and which also included a planetarium for the first time. In 1997 it was recognized as a regional environmental education center by the Lower Saxony Minister of Education, Rolf Wernstedt .

In the aftermath of Expo 2000 , the permanent exhibition unter.Welten opened in 2001, the largest and most expensive exhibition project on the subject of flooring to date. In 2009, the underground zoo was opened in cooperation with the Osnabrück Zoo. This area combines the keeping of live animals and museum educational communication methods. It is accessible to both groups of visitors. Together with this construction project, it was also possible to realize the basement of the previously planned second construction phase. A large conference room for up to 200 people and a small seminar room as well as service areas could be accommodated here. In 2011 and 2013 the planetarium was equipped with new technology. A so-called full dome video system makes visiting the planetarium a completely new experience. In addition to virtual journeys through space, interdisciplinary presentations are also on offer.

Collections

The Museum am Schölerberg aims to use the collection as a basis to document the most comprehensive possible picture of the development of nature and the landscape in the Osnabrück region , thereby providing an overview of biological and geological diversity. It thus creates an identity. Taxonomic groups characteristic of the Osnabrück region have a high collection priority in the field of biology. In the geology area, all aspects of the Osnabrück mountainous region are documented. The fossil finds from the Pennsylvania (Upper Carboniferous) of the Piesberg near Osnabrück , which are important worldwide, are a specialty .

In addition, the museum is keen to honor the work of scientifically motivated collectors in the region and to preserve their collections in full in the region (i.e. in the museum) if necessary. The Museum am Schölerberg currently has a collection of around 250,000 objects.

This allows the natural movements to be reproduced in a strongly shortened manner. Since 2011, the projector is a full-dome supplemented -Videoprojektionstechnik. Controlled by high-performance computers, images and videos are projected onto the 100 m² area of the entire dome. Programs for children, adolescents and adults are shown. In addition, live demonstrations of the current starry sky are offered on a regular basis.
