Kevin Wayne Durant (born September 29, 1988 in Washington, DC ) is an American basketball player who is currently under contract with the Brooklyn Nets . He came into the NBA as a Small Forward / Shooting Guard , but due to his size is increasingly used as a Power Forward . Durant is characterized, among other things, by its strong ball handling at a height of 2.08 meters.
School and college days
As a student, Kevin Durant was a member of the team at the National Christian Academy in Fort Washington, Maryland , then at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia , and then at the Montrose Christian School in Rockville , Maryland. At Montrose he averaged 23.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per encounter in his senior year. In 2006 he moved to the University of Texas , for which he played in the 2006/07 season, averaging 25.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. In the finals of the Big 12 Conference, he reached the final with his team. At the end of the season, Kevin Durant became the first ever freshman and University of Texas player to be named College Player of the Year.
NBA
Greg Oden and Kevin Durant were considered the two contenders for first place ahead of the NBA's 2007 draft . The Portland Trail Blazers , who had the first pick , opted for Oden, while Durant ended up with the Seattle SuperSonics .
The first season
Durant began his first game year in the NBA on October 31, 2007 with a game against the Denver Nuggets , in which he could record 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals for themselves. In the final game of the season, he was able to record a new career high when he scored 42 points against the Golden State Warriors . In his 2007/08 rookie season , he achieved an average of 20.3 points and 4.3 rebounds. He was then voted Rookie of the Year at the end of the season . So he led the NBA All-Rookie First Team that year.
2008/09
In 2008 the team moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City and called themselves Oklahoma City Thunder . At the NBA Rookie Challenge on the occasion of the NBA All-Star Game 2009 in Phoenix, Durant scored 46 points, setting a new record for this competition. He was voted best player (MVP) in the Rookie Challenge.
2009/10
In the 2009/10 season , Durant made the move to superstar, averaging 30.1 points and 7.6 rebounds. No other player in previous league history had led the NBA as the best basket hunter at a younger age (21). On February 17, 2009 he was able to set up a new career high of 47 points in a game against the New Orleans Hornets .
This season he was also nominated for the first time for the NBA All-Star Game and elected to the All-NBA First Team . Behind superstar LeBron James , Durant finished second in the 2009/10 MVP election . He was also able to qualify with his team after 50 wins in 82 games for the first time for the playoffs, where the Thunder met the Los Angeles Lakers , who are considered favorites, in the first round . In his playoff debut Durant scored 24 points, but had to admit defeat to the Californians around Kobe Bryant . In the second game they also lost despite 32 points from Durant. Only in the third game of the series could the Oklahoma City Thunder book a victory, not least thanks to 29 points and 19 rebounds from Durant. The fourth game also went to the Oklahoma City team, but Los Angeles won the last two games in the series.
2010-2016
On July 7, 2010, Durant announced that he had extended his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder for a total of $ 86 million for five years. On January 26, 2011 set his career high of 47 points and a new career high of 18 rebounds in the victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves . On February 19, 2012, Durant scored over 50 points for the first time in his career and improved his career best to 51 points in a game.
In 2011 he was first chosen as a starter for the NBA All-Star Game. In addition, Durant finished the season with the highest point average of all NBA players for the second time in a row.
At the 2012 NBA All-Star Game in Orlando , he was voted the most valuable player with 36 points and 7 rebounds . For the third time in a row, he finished the season with the highest point average in the league.
On November 18, 2012, he managed his first triple-double in the NBA against the Golden State Warriors with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
In the 2013-14 season , Durant averaged 32 points per game, making it the best NBA scorer for the fourth time. He also scored at least 25 points in 41 games in a row. He exceeded the personal best of Michael Jordan from the 1986/87 season , who managed 40 games with 25 points or more. On May 6, 2014 Durant became the most valuable player ( NBA Most Valuable Player selected) the 2013/14 season. Durant achieved a league and career high of 32.0 points per game. In the playoffs he failed with the Thunder in the conference final to the eventual champions San Antonio Spurs .
Due to a foot injury, Durant was out in the first month of the 2014/15 season . He returned on December 2, 2014, scoring 27 points against the New Orleans Pelicans . Nevertheless, he injured himself again on December 18, 2014 while playing against the Golden State Warriors. At the time of his injury, he had scored 30 points in 18 minutes. This made him the first player in NBA history to score 30 points in less than 20 minutes. Nevertheless, Durant fell out for the rest of the season, so that he could only complete 27 games for the Thunder, in which he averaged 25.4 points per game. Without Durant, the Thunder also missed the playoffs.
In the second game of the first play-off round 2015-16, he met against Dallas seven of his 33 throws from the field. Since 1970 only one player has missed at least 25 throws: Michael Jordan (9 of 35) in 1997 against the Miami Heat. The series against the Mavericks ended Durant with 26 points per game. That was the 14th of his career and also the 14th in which he got at least 25 points per game. Only one player had a longer run: Michael Jordan played a total of 37 playoff series and averaged 25 points or more 37 times.
Golden State Warriors (2016-2019)
In the summer of 2016, Durant became a free agent . He announced on July 4, 2016 that he would be leaving the Thunder and joining the runner-up, the Golden State Warriors. With the Warriors, Durant received a two-year contract worth $ 54 million. Durant then played alongside all-stars Stephen Curry , Draymond Green and Klay Thompson . Durant reached the NBA final with the Warriors, where they met last year's champions Cleveland Cavaliers . The Warriors defeated the Cavaliers 4-1, with which Durant celebrated his first championship title. Durant was named the best player (MVP) of the final series. He was able to repeat this the following season, when the Warriors defeated Cleveland again. In spring 2019, he tore his right Achilles tendon in the fifth game of the NBA finals and had to undergo an operation.
Brooklyn Nets (since 2019)
At the end of June 2019, Durant announced his move to the Brooklyn Nets , which also strengthened with Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan . According to media reports, Durant had reached a four-year contract with Brooklyn and a total salary of $ 164 million.
National team
At the 2010 World Cup in Turkey, Durant took part with the American national team. With an average of 22.8 points, he led the team into the final against hosts Turkey , which they won 81:64. This marked the USA's first world title since 1994. Durant was later named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. In the semi-final match against Lithuania, he set his World Cup best of 38 points the day before. At the 2012 Olympic Games , he won the gold medal undefeated with the US selection. Durant scored 30 points in the final against Spain . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, he won the gold medal again with the American national team.
Others
After beginning his career in the NBA Durant signed a 60 million US dollar doped advertising contract for a term of seven years with the US sportswear manufacturer Nike. In addition to a clothing collection, Durant was equipped with its own line of shoes. In September 2014, he signed a new ten-year contract with Nike that brought him $ 350 million in revenue, making him one of the highest-paid athletes in the world.
In 2013, Durant earned $ 35 million, making it one of the five highest-paid NBA players of the year.
He was engaged to WNBA player Monica Wright , but the couple separated again in 2014.
In June 2020 Durant stated that five percent of the MLS - Franchise Philadelphia Union acquired to have. This made him a shareholder and co-owner.
Style of play
Durant's style of playing is characterized by its versatility and its risk of basketball, which is expressed, among other things, in its high scores. The mixture of his height (2.08 meters) with a good feel for the ball and mobility make him a player who can be used in several positions and is difficult to get under control of the opposing defense, which is partly due to his good distance throw . As a teenager, he stood out for his great diligence in training, which was also expressed in the fact that he watched videos of players such as Vince Carter , Tracy McGrady , Dirk Nowitzki , Kobe Bryant and LeBron James to analyze their strengths and then partly in training also to be acquired.
