college

From 1972 to 1975 Adams attended the University of Oklahoma and played for their basketball team, the Sooners . During his time with the Sooners he was the outstanding player and reached a total of 21 double doubles in the 1973-1974 season . Only Gar Heard could do that before, and in January 2009 the record was broken by Blake Griffin . In his best game for the Sooners , he reached 40 points and 20 rebounds, which Wayman Tisdale and Blake Griffin also succeeded afterwards . But during his time in college, he never reached the postseason . He was voted to an All-American team twice and was named Big Eight Player of the Year in 1975 . As of January 21, 1998, his jersey number, 33, is no longer used by the Sooners .

NBA

After he was drafted in the NBA by the Suns, he met his old college coach John MacLeod there again. In his rookie season he was the team's best scorer after Paul Westphal and reached the NBA finals with the team for the first time in the club's history . The team lost the finals to the Boston Celtics with 2-4. In addition, Adams was elected to the All-Star Team this season and appointed to the NBA All-Rookie Team as Rookie of the Year at the end of the season . After that, he never reached the finals with the Suns again in 12 years, as they mostly failed at the Los Angeles Lakers . In the history of the Suns, he has taken the most rebounds (6937), played the most games (988) and taken the most steals (1289). His jersey with the number 33 is no longer awarded by the Suns either, but he still allowed Grant Hill to wear it.
