List of NBA finals series
The list of NBA finals includes the series of finals for the National Basketball Association (NBA) championship since 1947. It is played in the best-of-seven mode . The first team to win four games in the series is the winner of the championship and the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy . It is named after the third NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien . Since 1969, the most valuable player in the final series has been awarded the NBA Finals MVP Award .
Since 1970, one of the two finalists has come from the Western Conference and one from the Eastern Conference, which in turn are divided into three divisions. Due to the small number of teams, there had previously only been two overarching divisions, Western and Eastern .
Until it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949, the league was called the Basketball Association of America (BAA).
