The 1948/49 BAA season was the last season of the Basketball Association of America , which was then merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association . The regular season began on November 1, 1948 and ended after 360 games on March 20, 1949. The postseason began on April 4 and ended on April 13. At the end of the season, the newcomer from Minneapolis defeated the Washington Capitols and became champion.
Season Notes
- Four teams from the National Basketball League (the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons , the Indianapolis Jets , the Minneapolis Lakers and the Rochester Royals ) are joining the BAA.
- Standards for hall lighting, nets, an orange basket ring and a glass backboard together with binding pitch markings are adopted. Teams are required to register between nine and eleven players and are allowed to rent up to two players to teams in foreign leagues, while the salary limit for the season has been set at $ 55,000.
- The Washington Capitols had the best start to the season for the next 67 years with 15 wins. It wasn't until 2015 that the record was broken by the Golden State Warriors with 24 wins.
- Providence had a series of 16 consecutive lost home games between November 13th and January 6th. Fortunately, the Providence Steamrollers' negative record only lasted 46 years. The Dallas Mavericks lost three more home games in 1994.
- Joe Fulks set on February 10, 1949 with 63 points (27 field goals and 9 free throws) in the game of the Philadelphia Warriors against the Indianapolis Jets on a preliminary point record, which should last over ten years.
