John Kundla

John Albert Kundla (born July 3, 1916 in Star Junction , Pennsylvania , † July 23, 2017 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American basketball coach .

Between 1947 and 1959 he coached the Minneapolis Lakers in the North American professional league NBA and its predecessor leagues BAA and NBL . With the team around George Mikan , he won six championships in the respective leagues (one each in NBL / BAA, four in the NBA). He is one of three coaches who have won three championships in a row with their teams (the other two are Red Auerbach and Phil Jackson ).

After his NBA coaching career ended in 1959, Kundla coached the University of Minnesota team until 1968 . He has been a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame since May 15, 1995 . In 1996, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the NBA, he was voted one of the 10 best NBA coaches of all time by selected journalists .
