Chauncey Ray Billups (born September 25, 1976 in Denver , Colorado ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 1997 to 2014, most of it with the Detroit Pistons .

Billups was an NBA All-Star five times in his career and won the 2004 NBA Championship and the Finals MVP Award with the Pistons . With the Team USA also winning the successful 2010 World Cup . In 2013, Billups was the first recipient of the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Awards for selfless play, exemplary behavior as a mentor on and off the field, and commitment to and dedication to the team.

profile

With a height of 1.91 meters and a weight of 91 kg, Billups was a strong point guard who also had a precise throw from distance. Due to his strong nerves and important basket successes in crunch time , he was nicknamed Mr. Big Shot .

Billups was also an excellent free throw shooter and, with a career average of around 89%, ranks sixth among the all-time free throw percentage leaders along with Ray Allen .

Career

High school

Billups attended George Washington High School in Denver and was named four-time All-State First Team player, three-time Colorado Mr. Basketball, and two-time Colorado Player of the Year . In 1995 he was elected to the McDonald's All-American Team , but could not participate due to a shoulder injury.

college

Billups attended the University of Colorado , but left it without a degree as he was drafted for the NBA after his sophomore year . In Colorado, he had an average of 18.5 points per game and in his sophomore year led the Buffaloes to their first win in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 30 years. Billup's jersey number 4 has been withdrawn from the university and is no longer awarded.

NBA

Billups was selected third in the 1997 first round of the NBA draft by the Boston Celtics . At the beginning of his career he was transferred several times and played to Boston for Toronto, Denver, Orlando and Minnesota. With the Timberwolves he finally had his breakthrough in the 2001-02 season .

Detroit Pistons (2002-2008)

He was finally able to prevail in 2002 at the Detroit Pistons, where he became a key player. The highlight of his time with the Pistons was winning the 2004 NBA Championship and being named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the NBA finals series. In 2005 he reached the final again with Detroit, but lost after seven games against the San Antonio Spurs .

In 2008, Billups also received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for social engagement. A year later he received the NBA Sportsmanship Award for fair athletic behavior.

Denver Nuggets (2008-2011)

At the beginning of the 2008-09 season, the Detroit Pistons swapped Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb for Allen Iverson of the Denver Nuggets. Billups returned to his hometown and became an important building block for reaching the final of the Western Conference in his first season with the Nuggets, his seventh conference finals entry in a row. Apart from himself, only Magic Johnson , Michael Cooper , Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kurt Rambis have managed this so far . In the 2009-10 season , Billups (33) became the oldest player to ever set a new career high for points per game in one season (19.5) in the NBA at that age.

New York Knicks (2011)

On February 22, 2011, Billups was awarded a first round pick, two second round picks and $ 3 million to the Billups along with Carmelo Anthony , Anthony Carter, Shelden Williams and Renaldo Balkman in exchange for Raymond Felton , Danilo Gallinari , Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mozgov New York Knicks handed in. After the 2010/2011 season, Billups was fired from the Knicks, via Amnesty Clause , to create enough wage room to sign Tyson Chandler .

Los Angeles Clippers (2011-2013)

A few days after he was released by the Knicks, the Los Angeles Clippers put in a bid for Billups. Since Billups was released by the Amnesty Clause, he did not become a free agent as in the usual case . Every NBA team, except for the New York Knicks and teams above the salary cap, was eligible to offer their rights, whether or not Billups accepted the offer.

If no bid had been received, Billups would have become a free agent and would have been able to negotiate a new (probably higher priced) contract with a team of his choice. Billups had threatened that if a team secured his rights, he would withdraw from the NBA. The difference between his salary at the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers bid was approximately $ 10 million and had to be paid by the New York Knicks. On February 6, 2012, his left Achilles tendon tore in a game against the Orlando Magic , causing him to be out for the remainder of the season. After the season, Billups extended his contract with the Clippers for another year at the end of which he became the first recipient of the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Awards .

Detroit Pistons (2013-2014)

For the 2013/2014 season, Billups signed a contract until 2015 with the Detroit Pistons , for which he was active from 2002 to 2008. There Billups was supposed to lead the young team and help bring the franchise back into play-offs. On September 10, 2014, Billups retired as a professional basketball player after his contract in Detroit was not renewed. In his honor, Billups' jersey number 1 is no longer awarded by the Pistons.
