Earl Joseph Watson Jr. (born June 12, 1979 in Kansas City , Kansas ) is an American basketball coach and former player. In his playing career he was active as a point guard for 13 years in the NBA .
Most recently, Watson was Head Coach of the Phoenix Suns .
Player career
Watson played for the UCLA Brunis college basketball team for four years . After graduating from college, Watson was selected in the 2001 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics in the second round of the draft. After his debut season, he was transferred to the Memphis Grizzlies , where he was a major rotation player.
In 2005, Watson joined the Denver Nuggets before returning to Seattle in the middle of the season. There he had his most successful athletic period and established himself in the 2007-08 season as a regular point guard of the Sonics. With 10.7 points and 6.8 assists per game, he played his best season so far. On February 6, 2008, Watson achieved the first triple double of his career. In the game against the Sacramento Kings he scored 23 points, 10 rebounds and distributed 10 templates.
After the Sonics, now renamed Thunder , released him, Watson joined the Indiana Pacers in 2009 .
In 2010 he switched to Utah Jazz .
Watson played for the Jazz until 2013, until he joined the Portland Trail Blazers in the summer of 2013 . The Blazers were his last stop as a professional basketball player.
Coaching career
At the end of the season, Watson announced his retirement and joined the Austin Spurs in the D-League as an assistant coach .
In 2015 he was an assistant coach at the Phoenix Suns . After head coach Jeff Hornacek was fired in late January 2016, Watson was appointed interim coach.
At the end of the season, Watson was named head coach for the Suns. On October 23, 2017, the Suns released him and appointed Jay Triano as their new interim coach.
Private
Watson is the son of an African American and a Mexican and was therefore also eligible to play for the Mexican national basketball team.
He was married to actress Jennifer Nicole Freeman and has a daughter.
