Humberto Cardinal Sousa Medeiros (born October 6, 1915 in Arrifes, São Miguel , Azores , Portugal ; † September 17, 1983 in Boston , USA ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston .

Life

Humberto Sousa Medeiros was born in 1915 in a village on the island of São Miguel, Azores. In 1931 the family emigrated to the United States and settled in Fall River . He studied Catholic theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC until 1946 and was ordained priestly for the Diocese of Fall River on June 15 of the same year in Fall River . In 1951 he went to Rome , where he received his doctorate from the Gregorian . In 1958 he was awarded the title of " Monsignor ".

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Brownsville on April 14, 1966 . He was episcopal ordained by the Bishop of Fall River, James Louis Connolly , on June 9 of that year; Co-consecrators were James Joseph Gerrard (en) , Titular Bishop of Forma and Auxiliary Bishop in Fall River, and Gerald Vincent McDevitt , Titular Bishop of Tigias and Auxiliary Bishop in Philadelphia .

On September 8, 1970, Pope Paul VI called him. to the Archbishop of Boston. The inauguration followed on October 7 of the same year. As a bishop, he took on the problems of farm workers and those living on the margins of society. On March 5, 1973, he was admitted to the College of Cardinals as Cardinal Priest of Santa Susanna and participated as such in the two conclaves in August and October 1978 .

Humberto Sousa Medeiros was the first Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy Northeastern (USA) of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

On September 17, 1983, at the age of 67, he died of complications from a heart attack and was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fall River.
