The bridge has a length of 31.80 m and a width of 14.60 m.

history

Historical development

The bridge was built in 1896 and opened up the zoo area with the 1881 opened zoo . From 1893 to 1914 numerous villas were built in this quarter by the architects Hermanns & Riemann . The former road bridge connected Hubertusallee with Sonnborner Straße , which is shown here as Bundesstraße 228 .

The bridge was given the name Hubertusbrücke on February 26, 1892 , but was no longer mentioned with this name in the address book of 1896/97. On March 5, 1889, a Kothener bridge was given its name (which is probably identical to the old zoo bridge) and was also no longer mentioned in the address book from 1896/97.

In 1924 the bridge also opened up access to the stadium at the zoo .

On June 16, 1981, the Wupperbrücke Siegfriedstrasse was opened to traffic , some of which was built below the Sonnborn railway bridge. The reinforced concrete bridge replaced the old zoo bridge for motor traffic, which had become too small for traffic.

The Zoo / Stadium station of the Wuppertal suspension railway is located directly at this bridge, which is a listed building.

Current development

Old Zoo Bridge in 2008

The bridge was last used only as a pedestrian bridge since the construction of the Wupperbrücke Siegfriedstraße .

In the period between the 2007 special bridge examination and the main bridge examination in 2008, the condition of the bridge had deteriorated to such an extent that a partial closure was initiated immediately before the North Rhine-Westphalia Day 2008 . A demolition of the building was not ruled out. The alternative access to Hubertusallee was provided via the nearby suspension railway station.
