Edward Urban Kmiec

Edward Urban Kmiec (born June 4, 1936 in Trenton , New Jersey , † July 11, 2020 in Buffalo , New York ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of the Bishops of Nashville (1992-2004) and Buffalo (2004 -2012).

Life

Edward Urban Kmiec studied philosophy at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore (MD) and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Trenton on December 20, 1961 . From 1962 to 1965 he worked in pastoral care in Belmar (NJ). In 1965 he became vice chancellor and personal secretary to the bishop. In 1982 he became vicar general .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Trenton and titular bishop of Simidicca on August 26, 1982 . The Bishop of Trenton, John Charles Reiss , ordained him episcopal on November 3 of that year ; Co- consecrators were George William Ahr , Old Bishop of Trenton, and James John Hogan , Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown .

He was named Bishop of Nashville on October 13, 1992, and inducted into office on December 3 of the same year. He was named Bishop of Buffalo on August 12, 2004, and inducted into the office on October 28 of that year. On May 29, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation put forward by Edward Urban Kmiec for reasons of age.

He was a member of the John Paul II Foundation , Canon Law Society of America, and a member of the US Bishops' Conference and the Regional Conference in New Jersey. With a Polish family background, he was involved in the Catholic League Religious Assistance to Poland in Chicago, the Kosciuszko Foundation , the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (PIASA), the Polish American Congress (PAC) and the Polish Children Heartline in Bricktown (NJ).

Kmiec was Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
