John Charles Reiss

John Charles Reiss (born May 13, 1922 in Red Bank , New Jersey , † March 4, 2012 in Lawrenceville , New Jersey) was Bishop of Trenton .

Life

John Charles Reiss, from a family of eleven children, studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and at the Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University in Mahwah , New Jersey . He was ordained a priest on May 31, 1947 by the Bishop of Trenton, William Aloysius Griffin . In 1954 he received his doctorate in canon law and then held various offices in the ordinariate of the Diocese of Trenton; he was secretary to Bishop George W. Ahr and master of ceremonies. In 1963 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed monsignor . In 1962 he became parish administrator and in 1965 pastor of St. Francis in Trenton.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 21, 1967 titular Bishop of Simidicca and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Trenton . The Bishop of Trenton George William Ahr donated him episcopal ordination on December 12, 1967 ; Co- consecrators were Walter William Curtis , Bishop of Bridgeport , and James John Hogan , Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown . In 1969 he also took over the parish of St. Francis in Trenton and the Sacred Heart Parish in South Plainfield. At the same time he became Episcopal Vicar for Middlesex County and Vicar General of the Diocese.

On March 11, 1980, Pope John Paul II appointed Reiss Bishop of Trenton. On June 30, 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
