According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 67.9 km 2 , of which 67.2 km 2 is land and 0.7 km 2 (1.03%) is water. A large data center of the New York Stock Exchange is located in Mahwah .

The National Park Service lists nine buildings and sites for Mahwah in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of December 25, 2018), including the Isaac Bogert House .
Demographics
As of the 2000 census, there are 24,062 people, 9,340 households and 6,285 families in the city. The population density is 358.3 inhabitants per km 2 . 87.93% of the population is White, 2.16% African American , 0.70% Native American , 6.31% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 1.50% from other races, and 1.38% mixed race . 4.27% are Latinos of any race.
Of the 9,340 households, 30.4% have children under the age of 18. 56.8% of them are married couples living together, 8.4% are single mothers, 32.7% are not families, 28.0% are single households and 7.3% are people over 65. The average household size is 2 , 43, the average family size 3.01.
