John Mortimer Fourette Smith

John Mortimer Fourette Smith (born June 23, 1935 in Orange , New Jersey - † January 22, 2019 in Lawrenceville , New Jersey) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Trenton .

Life

John Mortimer Fourette Smith was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark on May 27, 1961 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Newark and titular bishop of Tres Tabernae on November 20, 1987 . The Archbishop of Newark, Theodore Edgar McCarrick , ordained him episcopal on January 25 of the next year ; Co- consecrators were Peter Leo Gerety , Old Archbishop of Newark, and Walter William Curtis , Bishop of Bridgeport .

On June 25, 1991, he was appointed Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee . On November 21, 1995, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Trenton by John Paul II . After the resignation of John Charles Reiss , he succeeded him on June 30, 1997 as Bishop of Trenton. On December 1, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
