history

St. Joseph Seminary in Washington, DC

At the initiative of Archbishop Herbert Cardinal Vaughan of Westminster and the Baltimore Council of Churches , a group of priests got together to set up a new mission society in the United States. The training center was in London and was intended to prepare the priests for pastoral work with African Americans in America. The reason was that after the Civil War, more than seven million African Americans had no schooling or no professional qualifications. In addition, the crime rate had increased significantly. The number of immigrants had also risen to more than 15 million people, and the need for social and pastoral help became increasingly evident. The focus of pastoral work in the states should be the states of Maryland and Louisiana . Most of the Afro-American population lived here and it was hoped that pastoral activity and evangelization would gain the trust of the people.

The Mission Society of St. Joseph von Mill Hill , whose Superior General was Cardinal Vaughan, recognized early on that there was an urgent need to train African American priests. With their support, St. Joseph's Society of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1893 . The African-American priest Charles Randolph Uncles was called to be its director . The newly founded Josephite Fathers , as they were soon called, now took over the education of young African-Americans and taught them theology and social law .
