The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster ( lat. : Archidioecesis Vestmonasteriensis ) is in the UK located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in London .

It includes all boroughs of the Greater London administrative area north of the Thames and west of the River Lea and the boroughs of Staines , Sunbury-on-Thames and Hertfordshire (county) outside London .

history

As early as 1540-1550 there was an Anglican diocese of Westminster created by Henry VIII at Westminster Abbey , whose only bishop was Thomas Thirlby .

The Apostolic Vicariate of England was established around 1622 . On January 30, 1688, the Vicariate was divided into the four Vicariates Midland District , Western District , Northern District and London District .

On September 29, 1850, the circumscription bull Universalis Ecclesiae restored the Catholic hierarchy in England and raised the vicariate to an archdiocese and ecclesiastical province, which today is divided into the suffragan dioceses of Brentwood, East Anglia , Northampton and Nottingham. It bears the name of the London borough of Westminster - instead of Archdiocese of London - because a law of 1829, the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829 , prohibited all persons "outside the Church of England" from accepting the old episcopal titles.

cathedral

The Episcopal Church of Westminster is Westminster Cathedral in the City of Westminster (London), which is also the main Catholic church of Wales and England.
