The Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds ( lat. Dioecesis Loidensis , Engl. Diocese of Leeds ) is in United Kingdom situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Leeds .

history

The diocese of Leeds was founded in 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI. Established from assignments of the Vicariate Apostolic Northern District as Vicariate Apostolic Yorkshire District . On September 29, 1850, the Vicariate Apostolic Yorkshire District by Pope Pius IX. with the Apostolic Constitution Universalis Ecclesiae - restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England - raised to the diocese and renamed the Diocese of Beverley . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Westminster as a suffragan . The Diocese of Beverley gave on December 20, 1878 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Middlesbrough . On December 20, 1878, the Diocese of Beverley was renamed the Diocese of Leeds . The Diocese of Leeds gave on May 30, 1980 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Hallam .
