history

Pope Leo XIII. divided the Diocese of Beverley , which included all of Yorkshire , into two parts on December 20, 1878 : the Diocese of Leeds , south of the River Ouse , and the Diocese of Middlesbrough, north of the river. The city of York is divided between the two new dioceses and until 1982 all of the city's parishes were under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Middlesbrough.
