Augustine Harris
Thomas Augustine Harris (born October 27, 1917 in West Derby, a district of Liverpool , England ; † August 30, 2007 in Ince Blundell near Liverpool) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Middlesbrough from 1978 to 1992 .
Life
Augustine Harris studied theology and philosophy at St. Joseph's College in Upholland , Lancashire , and was ordained a priest on May 30, 1942 in Liverpool. He served as a chaplain in Walton Prison. He represented England in the International Council of Senior RC Prison Chaplains from 1957 to 1966. He was a member of the Vatican delegation to the congresses of the United Nations Crime Congresses (UNODC) in London (1960) and Stockholm (1965).
He was by Pope Paul VI. Appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Liverpool in 1965 and titular bishop of Socia . The episcopal ordination donated to him on 11 February 1966 Archbishop Richard Downey . After the sudden death of Archbishop George Andrew Beck , he was given the task of dedicating the completed Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral , the first Roman Catholic cathedral to be built in England in the 20th century.
In 1978 he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Middlesbrough by Pope John Paul II , whose new cathedral he consecrated in 1988. Harris has served on numerous national bodies and is known as the BBC pastor with broadcast services from the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.
In 1992, his resignation was granted by John Paul II.
