John Carmel Cardinal Heenan (born January 26, 1905 in Ilford , England , † November 7, 1975 in London ) was Archbishop of Westminster .

Life

John Carmel Heenan studied in the Ushaw College Durham and at the Pontifical Gregorian University , the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He received the sacrament of ordination in 1930 and then worked in parish ministry for more than twenty years. From 1947 to 1951 he was director of the Catholic Mission Society.

In 1951 Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Leeds . He was ordained bishop on March 15, 1951, William Godfrey , titular Archbishop of Cius and official of the nunciature in Poland. Co- consecrators were Joseph McCormack (en) , Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle and John Edward Petit (en) , Bishop of Menevia . In 1957 he was appointed Archbishop of Liverpool by the Pope . John Carmel Heenan attended the Second Vatican Council and was named Archbishop of Westminster in 1963. On February 22, 1965 he was by Pope Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Silvestro in Capite in the College of Cardinals received.

He died in London on November 7, 1975 and was buried in Westminster Cathedral .
