Salvatore Cardinal Pappalardo (born September 23, 1918 in Villafranca Sicula , Province of Agrigento , Italy , † December 10, 2006 in Palermo ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Palermo .

Life

Salvatore Pappalardo entered the Pontifical Roman Seminary in 1936 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology . After receiving his ordination on April 12, 1941, he continued his studies at the Pontifical Lateran University and a year later earned a doctorate in law. He then worked as a pastor , before he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican in 1947 and worked there in the department for special church tasks. From 1959 to 1965 he lectured in church diplomacy and law and was a pastor in two Roman parishes .

On December 7, 1965, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Miletus and the Apostolic Pro Nuncio in Indonesia . He received his episcopal ordination on January 16, 1966, Amleto Giovanni Cardinal Cicognani , Cardinal Bishop of Frascati ; Co- consecrators were Guido Luigi Bentivoglio , Archbishop of Catania , and Archbishop Antonio Samorè , Secretary of the Congregation for Special Ecclesiastical Tasks. In 1969 Paul VI appointed him. as President of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome and on October 17, 1970 made him head of the Archdiocese of Palermo. He headed this important diocese until his retirement in April 1996.

On March 5, 1973 he was by Paul VI. as Cardinal Priest with the title Church Santa Maria Odigitria dei Siciliani in the Cardinal College added. Cardinal Pappalardo attended the August and October 1978 conclaves. He did not take part in the 2005 conclave because he had exceeded the age limit of 80 years. The following year he died in Palermo at the age of 88.

Pappalardo became internationally known because, during his tenure as Archbishop of Palermo, he spoke out against the mafia in fearless sermons and was the first to break through the " wall of silence ". This was triggered by the murder of two activists by the Mafia in 1992.

Until his death he was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Sicily of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
