Francesco Cardinal Carpino (born May 18, 1905 in Palazzolo Acreide , Province of Syracuse , Italy ; † October 5, 1993 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Monreale from 1951 to 1961 , Archbishop of Palermo from 1967 to 1970 and later Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Francesco Carpino studied in Noto and Rome Catholic theology and received on 14 August 1927, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked briefly at the seminary of Noto before he became a lecturer at the Athenaeum in Rome from 1929 to 1951. In addition, he worked for various congregations of the College of Cardinals and did temporary work in several Roman parishes . In 1939 he was given the honorary title of Papal Secret Chamberlain . On February 11, 1951, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular of Nicomedia and coadjutor -Erzbischof of Monreale , on 23 August the same year as archbishop of the diocese of Monreale. In addition to his pastoral duties, Francesco Carpino continued to work for the college of cardinals. Pope Paul VI took him on June 26, 1967 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice in via Tuscolana in the College of Cardinals and on the same day appointed him Archbishop of Palermo. On October 17, 1970, Cardinal Francesco Carpino resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Palermo and took care of relations between the Curia and the bishops. On January 27, 1977 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Albano .

Francesco Carpino died on October 5, 1993 in Rome and was initially buried in his hometown. In 1998 his body was transferred to the Cathedral of Palermo .
