Noto is a town in the municipality consortium Syracuse outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy with 24,154 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). Noto is one of the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Location and dates

Noto is 35 kilometers southwest of Syracuse on the southern edge of the Monti Iblei at 159  m slm. The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture, industry and tourism.

The station is on the Canicattì – Syracuse railway line and the city is connected to the Italian motorway network with an exit on the A18 motorway.

Noto is the bishopric of the Diocese of Noto .

With an area of ​​550.86 km², Noto is the fourth largest municipality in Italy in terms of area and, in addition to the core city, includes the districts of Marina di Noto, San Corrado di Fuori and Testa dell'Acqua and San Lorenzo.

The neighboring municipalities are Avola , Canicattini Bagni , Ispica ( RG ), Modica (RG), Pachino , Palazzolo Acreide , Rosolini and Syracuse .

About 6 km northwest of today's city is the ancient Neton (Latin Netum , now called Noto Antica or Noto Vecchia ), which, founded by the Sikelern , came under the control of Syracuse early on . From 263 B.C. The city was officially ruled by Hieron II. Later it came under Roman rule as civitas foederata . Excavations brought to light the Sicilian necropolis , Hellenistic tombs and catacombs .

Under the Arabs (from 862) Noto gained supraregional importance in the Middle Ages and was the last Muslim bastion in Italy until 1091 .

The present city was built in 1703 southeast of Noto Antica, which was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. As a result, Noto was rebuilt according to plan and uniformly in the style of the Sicilian baroque . City architect was Rosario Gagliardi . The architect Vincenzo Sinatra also contributed to today's cityscape with his buildings.

A rectangular street grid was used as the basis for the construction of the new city. The preferred building material for churches and palaces was light-colored tufa from the area.
