history

Cassaro bears the name of an Arab castle "Casar". Over the centuries it belonged to the Moleti family and later to Spadafora. Margherita Moleti-Spadafora brought the fief into marriage with Baron Pietro Siracusa (Siracusa family ) from the city of Noto , who already owned the baronies Muscia, Xiridia (now Floridia ) and Monastero. He also took the investiture of the Cassaro fief, according to documents from the State Archives of Palermo and from the Capibreve of Barbieri. His only daughter Margherita brought the fiefs to the house of Gaetani di Sortino. She died with her first-born son, Guido , in the 1542 earthquake that destroyed the castle and the town of Sortino . Together with her husband Cesare Gaetani, she is one of the ancestors of the Princes of Cassaro and Queen Paola of Belgium , née Princess Ruffo di Calabria.

Cassaro was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake that killed 56,000 people. The place was rebuilt a few kilometers further.
