Francofonte is an Italian commune in the Syracuse Consortium in the region of Sicily with 12,349 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Francofonte is located 65 km northwest of Syracuse on the east side of the Monti Iblei . The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture, the food industry and the production of concrete.

The neighboring municipalities are Buccheri , Carlentini , Lentini , Militello in Val di Catania ( CT ) and Vizzini (CT).

The parish was founded in the second half of the 14th century. Francofonte was built around a fort. The city of Hydra is said to have once stood north of today's location.

Cultural reference

In the verismo opera Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni Francofonte is quoted. Mamma Lucia believes that her son Turiddu went there to buy wine. Since Francofonte is the only place named in the work, the unknown location of the Cavalleria rusticana can be spatially assigned to the immediate surroundings of Francofonte.
