Pachino is a town in the municipality consortium Syracuse outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy with 22,312 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Pachino is 53 kilometers southwest of Syracuse . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture in the cultivation of grapes and tomatoes ( Pomodoro di Pachino ) and in fishing in the Marzamemi district .

The neighboring municipalities are Portopalo di Capo Passero , Rosolini , Pozzallo , Ispica and Noto .

After the rail traffic to Pachino was discontinued in 1985, the city can only be reached by road today. One of the best surfing spots in Sicily is located near Pachino, on the south-eastern tip of Sicily. An approx. 400 meter wide sandy beach, embedded between two rock tongues that protrude far into the sea. The ground is made of sand, so there is no risk of falling. The ground rises sharply from the sea side, which causes very high waves. Here waves pile up to 3 meters high, depending on the swell. In the adjacent bay the waves are more moderate.

People have already settled here in prehistoric times . The current place was founded in 1758. Residents from Malta have settled here.
