Ferla is an Italian commune in the free municipal consortium of Syracuse in the autonomous region of Sicily with 2400 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy).

Location and dates

Ferla is 40 km west of Syracuse . The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and sheep breeding.

The neighboring municipalities are Buccheri , Buscemi , Carlentini , Cassaro and Sortino .

The Cassaro-Ferla station was on the narrow-gauge railway line Syracuse-Ragusa .

history

The name of the place is derived from ferula , named after a flower growing in this area. The place has been mentioned in documents since the 12th century. The place was destroyed in the earthquake in 1693. Today's Ferla was rebuilt north of the old city. Due to the reconstruction, Ferla has a strong baroque character.

  • San Sebastiano Martire Church founded in the 15th century, rebuilt after the earthquake. The church is a three-aisled basilica with a baroque portal.

Out of town

Outside the village, the necropolis of Pantalica can be visited. The necropolis of Pantalica is one of the great necropolis of Sicily and contains more than 5000 chamber tombs. It belongs to the world heritage of UNESCO .
