Buccheri is a town of the Free Church consortium Syracuse in the region Sicily in Italy with 1,889 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Buccheri is 56 kilometers west of Syracuse . The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Buscemi , Carlentini , Ferla , Francofonte , Giarratana ( RG ) and Vizzini ( CT) .

The Buccheri station was on the narrow-gauge Giarratana – Vizzini railway .

history

The place from the Middle Ages was destroyed in the earthquake in 1693, there is still a tower stump of the Norman fort of the Paternò family . Buccheri was rebuilt in the same place.

Attractions

The Magdalena Church is on the main street. The facade dates from the 18th century. The church is the work of Michelangelo di Giacomos. Inside there is a statue of Magdalena from 1508. The Saint'Antonio church dates from the 18th century, the stairs in front of the church were built in 1911. Inside there are two paintings by Borremans. The stucco decoration on the vault dates from 1760 and was created by Gianforma.

To the south of the village lies Monte Lauro , at 986 meters the highest mountain in the Monti Iblei .
