Giarratana is a municipality in Ragusa consortium of municipalities outside the region Sicily in Italy with 2,862 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Giarratana is located 21 km north of Ragusa . The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture, grain and onions are grown.
The neighboring municipalities are Buccheri ( SR ), Buscemi (SR), Licodia Eubea ( CT ), Modica , Monterosso Almo , Ragusa and Vizzini (CT).
The Giarratana station was on the narrow-gauge railway line Syracuse-Ragusa .
history
Originally the city was further north, it was called Cerretanum Jarratanae . Today this zone is called Terravecchia and is located near Monte Lauro . Today's city was founded after the earthquake in 1693. She was officially "born" on August 26, 1693, there was a sales contract. First the construction of the churches started. In the north the Basilica of Sant'Antonio Abate, in the south the Church of San Bartolomeo and in a central location the Church of Madre.
