Diedrich Wattenberg (born June 13, 1909 in Burgdamm (today Bremen ), † November 26, 1996 in Berlin-Mahlsdorf ) was a German astronomer who published around 2500 papers and 1600 lectures.

Live and act

Wattenberg had been a member of the Olbers Society Bremen since July 1927 and its chairman since 1948; He was also a member of the Berlin Astronomical Association (BAV). His contributions were u. a. published in the magazines Die Sterne , Die Himmelswelt , Natur und Kultur , Voices of Time and Das Weltall . On August 23, 1951, he was awarded the Goethe Prize by the city of Berlin . From 1948 to November 1, 1976 he was director of the Archenhold observatory , a public observatory in Berlin-Alt-Treptow . In 1945, he directed its reconstruction after its destruction in World War II . His main field of activity was the history of astronomy. Through his initiative, astronomy lessons were introduced in the 9th and 10th grades of the polytechnic high schools of the GDR . In 1964 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver, in 1980 the Leibniz Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

His memoirs were published in 1984 by Union Verlag under the title Gestirnter Himmel über mir - Captions from my life .

His grave is in the cemetery at the old parish church Berlin-Mahlsdorf , Hönower Straße 17/19.
