Avola is a town in the municipality consortium Syracuse outdoors in the region Sicily in Italy with 31,145 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). The red wine grape variety Nero d'Avola is known beyond the borders of Italy .
Location and dates
Avola is located 27 kilometers southwest of Syracuse near the Ionian coast. The residents mainly work in industry and agriculture. Avola is the center of almond cultivation .
The city is on the SS 115 from Syracuse to Ragusa . Avola has a rail connection to the Canicattì – Syracuse railway line .
The neighboring communities are Noto and Syracuse .
history
The place is mentioned under the name Abolla ( Greek Ἄβολλα ) by Stephanos of Byzantium . Numerous hoards of coins from the 5th to 2nd centuries BC were found here . Since late antiquity the place has been inhabited by Byzantines and Arabs. It was completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1693. 8 km from the old town (now Avola Antica ), Avola was rebuilt in 1695 in the shape of a hexagon. The center is the Piazza Umberto I, on which the cathedral is located.
