Paolo Tiralongo (born July 8, 1977 in Avola ) is an Italian racing cyclist .

Career

In 1998, Paolo Tiralongo finished the U23 event of the Giro d'Italia , the " Baby Giro ", in third place overall. In 2000 he became a professional with the Italian cycling team Fassa Bortolo . He drove there for three years and then switched to Ceramiche Panaria . His best result in his first season there was a second place in the Giro behind Kurt Asle Arvesen . Tiralongo has been driving for the Italian ProTour team Lampre-Fondital since 2006 . At the Giro d'Italia , he was out of a breakaway group and finished third in the 14th stage, just seven seconds behind Luis Felipe Laverde . In 2010 he moved to Team Astana . In 2011, shortly before his 34th birthday, he achieved his first professional success at the Giro d'Italia when he won the 19th stage to Macugnaga in front of his teammate from last year, Alberto Contador . His next professional victory followed a year later at the Giro d'Italia . As in the previous year, he was able to prevail in a mountain finish, this time in Rocca di Cambio, ahead of a top favorite, Michele Scarponi .

In December 2014, Tiralongo announced that it would sue the daily La Repubblica for reporting on the Padua Public Prosecutor's investigation into defamation. In an article dated December 7th, he saw himself wrongly brought into the vicinity of Madrid's "doping doctor" Eufemiano Fuentes .
