The Tour of the Alps (until 2016 Giro del Trentino , German Trentino tour ) is an international cycling race .

The race initially took place in 1962 and 1963 as a one-day race in the Italian province of Trento . In 1979 the name was taken up again for a stage race , which usually comprised four stages and took place at the end of April. In 1986, when the race was held as a team competition under the name Coppa Italia , there was a one-time interruption of this competition mode. In 2015, the Giro del Trentino merged with the Trofeo Melinda while retaining the name . With the staging of 2017, the race was renamed the Tour of the Alps and now extends over the entire Tyrol region , i.e. in addition to the province of Trento also the province of South Tyrol and the Austrian state of Tyrol .

Due to the difficult alpine stages, the race serves as a preparatory race for the Giro d'Italia that follows shortly thereafter . The tour has been part of the UCI Europe Tour since 2005 and was initially classified in category 2.1. In 2011 she was upgraded to the 2nd HC category.
