Mikel Landa Meana (born December 13, 1989 in Murgia ) is a Spanish cyclist whose greatest successes are three stage wins and third place overall at the Giro d'Italia 2015 and a stage win at the Vuelta a España 2015 .

Career

The Basque Mikel Landa turned professional for the Spanish Continental Team Orbea in August 2009 . This year he still reached fourth place in the overall ranking of the Vuelta a Madrid for drivers under 23. In his first full professional year he was fifth in the overall ranking of the Tour de l'Avenir , which is one of the most important junior tours counts.

In 2011 he switched to ProTeam Euskaltel-Euskadi , for whom he was able to achieve his first professional victory. He won the fifth stage of the Burgos Tour and also the mountain classification. He finished the tour in 19th place overall. In 2014 Landa won one stage of the Giro del Trentino .

In 2015 he competed in the Giro d'Italia as domestics for Fabio Aru , where he won two stages in a row and finally finished third overall on this tour, 3:05 minutes behind, one place behind team-mate Aru. At the Vuelta a España , he won the mountain finish on the 11th stage.

At the end of the season he decided to switch to the British team Team Sky . In addition to a stage win at the Vuelta Ciclista al País Vasco , he won the overall and mountain classification at the Giro del Trentino , as well as the victory of the 2nd stage.

In 2017 he won the mountain classification and the 19th stage at the Giro d'Italia , after having been narrowly beaten in two mountain stages in the sprint. At the Spanish championships he was second in the time trial. He also won two stages of the Burgos Tour , the overall, points and mountain classification.

Landa also started at the Tour de France , where he was in the helper role for teammate Chris Froome and had to subordinate his own ambitions that he had during the tour. In the time trial on the penultimate stage, Mikel Landa narrowly missed the podium, the Frenchman Romain Bardet was just able to defend his third place in the overall standings and relegated the Basque to fourth place with a one-second advantage. Then Landa moved to the Spanish team Movistar .

In 2018 Landa won a stage at Tirreno – Adriatico . At the Tour de France , he started with his teammates Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde with the overall standings as the goal, where he finished seventh in the overall standings and won the team standings with the team. A few weeks later he was involved in a mass fall at the Clásica San Sebastián and suffered serious injuries to his spine.
