Francesco Casagrande (born September 14, 1970 in Florence ) is a former Italian cyclist .

Career

The skinny mountain specialist was one of the best professional cyclists in Italy, especially in the second half of the 1990s.

Doping ban 1998

In 1998, Casagrande was suspended for nine months for doping .

In addition to numerous Italian one-day classics, he twice won the Clásica San Sebastián cycling world cup (1998, 1999) and the Flèche Wallonne in 2000 .

At the Tour de France , he could not prevail - a sixth place in 1997 was his best result.
In 1999 he achieved overall success at the Tour de Suisse with a lead of 1:04 minutes over Frenchman Laurent Jalabert . In 2000 he took over the leadership of the UCI world rankings for almost a year .

Second in the Giro d'Italia 2000
