Egan Arley Bernal Gómez (born January 13, 1997 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian racing cyclist . He became the first Tour de France winner from South America in 2019 and won the Giro d'Italia in 2021 .

Career

Egan Bernal grew up on the outskirts of Zipaquirá in the poor district of Bolivar 83 , a founding of the guerrilla group M-19 . Zipaquirá is located in the center of Colombia, about 40 kilometers north of the capital Bogotá , at an altitude of 2650 meters. At the end of 2010, Bernal joined the Pura Actitud (sp., Dt .: pure setting ) team, whose leader Pablo took over the team. with the aim of helping disadvantaged young people. As a junior rider, Bernal devoted himself primarily to mountain bike races and won the silver medal at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Cross Country in 2014 and the bronze medal in 2015.

In his first year in the adult sector, 2016, Bernal was signed by Gianni Savio for the UCI Professional Continental Team Androni Giocattoli on the recommendation of a Colombian journalist . In his first season he won the Tour of Bihor - Bellotto and the junior competition of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali and the Giro del Trentino . In 2017 he won three international stage races : the Tour de Savoie Mont-Blanc , the Sibiu Cycling Tour and, for the Colombian national team, the UCI Nations' Cup U23 race Tour de l'Avenir .

In January 2018, Bernal signed a three-year contract with Team Sky , which was renamed Team Ineos in May 2019, whereby the contract with Androni was prematurely canceled for a transfer fee. He started the Tour de France 2018 and finished 15th as a helper to overall winner Geraint Thomas and overall third Chris Froome on his debut. A few weeks later he was involved in a mass fall at the Clásica San Sebastián and suffered serious injuries to his face.

In 2019, Egan Bernal won the Paris – Nice stage race ahead of his compatriot Nairo Quintana . He was supposed to compete in the 2019 Giro d'Italia as captain, but could not start after a broken collarbone that he suffered in training. After his recovery, he won the overall ranking of the Tour de Suisse 2019 .

The subsequent Tour de France 2019 contested Bernal as co-captain of the Ineos team together with last year's winner Geraint Thomas . On the 19th stage he took over the yellow jersey after an attack on the Col de l'Iseran and the subsequent termination of the race due to the impassability of the descent due to hail . Bernal won the tour ahead of his teammate Thomas, becoming the first South American and, at the age of 22, the third youngest winner in the history of the Tour de France after Henri Cornet in 1904 and François Faber in 1909 . When he returned to his hometown Zipaquirá , Bernal was celebrated by around 10,000 people.

The following year, Bernal could not meet the expectations placed in him, and he had to give up the Tour de France after the 16th stage because of persistent back problems. In the autumn of that year, medical examinations revealed that one leg was longer than the other due to scoliosis , and that this was the reason for the back pain. Treatment was through physiotherapy and exercises to strengthen the back; an operation was not possible. It was initially unclear when Bernal could race again.

Bernal won the Giro d'Italia in 2021 after taking over the Maglia Rosa by winning the 9th stage . He did not give up the overall lead and also won the 16th stage in the Maglia Rosa .
