Dario Frigo (born September 18, 1973 in Saronno , Italy ) is a former Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

In 1991 Dario Frigo was third in the Italian junior road championship. From 1995 to 2005 he was under contract with various professional teams. His most important victories were Paris – Nice in 2001, the Tour de Romandie in 2001 and 2002, the Zurich championship in 2002. In 2003 he won the Setmana Catalana de Ciclisme .

Frigo took part in the Giro d'Italia four times , in 2003 he won the 18th stage and was seventh in the overall standings, in the same year he drove the Vuelta a España . He competed in the Tour de France three times - in 1997 , 2002 and 2005 . When he participated in 2002 he won the 17th stage and finished 25th in the overall ranking. In 2005 he was arrested by the French police during his tour participation after the tenth stage.

Doping 2005

On July 13, 2005, Frigo was arrested in Courchevel after the banned hormone EPO was found in his wife's car . In 2001 there had been an investigation into a doping scandal at the Giro d'Italia 2001 , and he had been fined heavily. In April 2009, he and his wife were each sentenced to three months' probation after they had appealed against the original judgment from 2005 - six months on probation each plus a fine of 8,757 euros. Frigo himself described himself as a "victim of the systematic doping system" in his team at the time.
